Renewable Energy Project Proposal
Riley Wanzek
For my internship I will attend the staff at 4CORE. The interest of work that this institution does for Durango is monitoring and reducing energy use. This company also advocates spreading the word about efficient renewable energy systems. Their goal is to make Durango a more resource efficient. Along with my work at 4CORE I will also hopefully getting some experience with hands on applications in the renewable energy field, work such as instillation and observation of these energy systems at work.
A confirmed mentor of mine right now is a great, intelligent man by the name of Gregg Dubit. Gregg is the executive director of 4CORE, he looks at data concerning resource efficiency as well as ways to inspire the community to become more resource savvy. Due to the last minute decision to make my internship a hybrid of my work at 4CORE and a solar installation company, I’m not sure if I will have another mentor. However I hope that my mentor teaches my much about this fairly new interest of renewable energy that I have. I also hope to gain some tips about the pros and cons of the different contributions that have made to the world of renewable energy.
The goals that I have for this internship is to gain a better understanding of renewable energy and how these systems work along with what is in store for the future of alternative energy. My personal goals are to gain a better understanding about how they work and why. As a career I am interested in the development of efficient energy resources, and all of the different directions that might take.
For my project, I have a couple of different ideas revolving around the use of renewable energy. Using the knowledge I gain from my internship I can use this to show how a home can be made to become more resource efficient. By using my own home as an example I will use the knowledge I gain to make a difference in the community and even the world. Since I will mainly be working with Photovoltaic making some type of system that can power my electronics would give me a hands on project that also reduces the energy bill. I want this project to be something beneficial for my time and work along with making a cleaner difference in the world. This project will be shown at my exhibition, hopefully inspiring people to take action and get involved with the clean contributions of alternative energies.
All of the concepts that we are learning in chemistry involve chemical reactions and the use of energy. This will help me gain some background knowledge about how these reactions happen and what types and power of energy comes out of it. The ability to think critically and creatively I believe will serve me positively in the work that I do, both these skills tend to come naturally for me. Another skill that I will improve on is a general better understanding of how nature can provide us with energy, because initially that is the starting point of any alternative energy source.
I will use my time effectively to make sure that my project is ready to go at exhibition. I will brainstorm more ideas of what my project will look like in final product form. I will make sure that this final piece of work is something that I am very proud of and it serves a purpose, as well as inspiration of the people who choose to take an interest in it.
Lining up an internship was much more of a challenging feat than I initially thought. I contacted a number of places, with absolutely not one of them contacting me back. But a lot of these companies where revolved in the ski and snow industry so maybe the staffs were too busy skiing. My final hope came in a face-to-face conversation so I believe the power of human interaction and connection is the most important aspect of making an internship happen because that says a lot more then an email.
I have had many different ideas of what I wanted my internship to look like, but the idea of getting a better knowledge of renewable resources and energy I believe was the best option as far as my future goes. This field has taken a deep interest in my life, but much more recently as I start not only to think about my future but the future of our planet. This internship really gives us juniors a chance to make an impression on a field that we are passionate about, which can go along way.
I am excited for the start of something new and adult-like. This opportunity gives me a chance to have fun, learn different ideas, and make a difference.
