I pull my dusty, mud-covered, dark green 2001 Subaru Forester into neutral. Jamming the emergency brake as high as it will go, hoping it does not roll, I slide the stick into gear for extra protection. I frantically get out while gazing at the creek opening the back door for my fishing buddy rushes out and soon is on his way to sniff out the nearest marmot or prairie dog. Blending in with the tall dark grass and rocky landscape, he is an ideal companion for this meditative fishing session. Soon my rod is set up with the most appealing bug I can find in my scattered fly box. I am off down toward the slow, meandering East fork of Hermosa Creek. Across the small valley I can see the abandon seat cushions of those chairlifts of Purgatory that I have ridden my whole life. Milling countless jean skiing, sunglass-wearing tourist’s to the top for a shot at feeling a cool mountain breeze across their sunscreen-caked faces. I make my way down some rocks and find myself in fields of Dandelions and Arizona fescue most of it getting caught between my toes and the rubber vibram soles of my sun-beaten Chaco’s. I give a quick whistle and Rossi comes running to my side; we navigate our way to a starting point where then I will fish up stream.
Seeing a larger fish lurking in some slack water I toss my artificial fly over the top of his head. Rossi stands at my side, eyes focused on the small ball of glitter, as he knows is will violently disappear.
Soon the intricate, native patterns of a Colorado cutthroat trout are in hot pursuit of my fly. A pump of the heart a splash of the tail and soon the 7ft. 11-inch extension on my left arm starts to tug, causing the water’s surface to break repeatedly. Overloaded with interest Rossi attempts to gently snatch the hooked fish, grabbing my line and I direct the fish into the palm of my hand. Soon contact is made and I can feel the slime and muscle. Quickly I dislodge the chew toy from the small sharp teeth, handling the fish with respect I hold it up to my rod to record the length. Gasping for water the fish pants like its been lifted into outer space. Finally I take a minute to admire the reddish, gold, spotted, slimly strip of frantically flapping fish within my grasp. Each fish I catch something new and unique, a feeling that never seizes to amaze me. Rossi gives me the classic smile and a paw eager to fulfill his mouth of fish. But I tease him pushing the fish from my fingertips, as is speeds off into the depths of a multicolored pool disappearing like water. Stalking up the stream, I maneuver as slowly as possible, crawling at points making sure not to blow my cover and thus spook the fish. I lose track of the worries presented by the modern world, while gaining memories, meditation, and an interest in my present environment.
Its days of fishing like this that bring me peace, interest and an escape from all of the insignificant problems of being a human. A year later I can vividly depict this scene, forever carving memories out of my life that I will always remember.
I pull my dusty, mud-covered, dark green 2001 Subaru Forester into neutral. Jamming the emergency brake as high as it will go, hoping it does not roll, I slide the stick into gear for extra protection. I see many skaters at a distance, rolling and sliding through the many dips of the skate park. Some jumping as their boards preform flips under their feet. Grapping my board from the back, soon I am off ready to find the rhythm of the concrete. Kick, push, kick, and push. Slowly making my commute to the edge of the concrete craters. Locking my back truck over the 7ft. concrete wave that stands before me, I feel a pump of the heart and I am ready to dive to the bottom and explore the hidden rhythm. A flash of adrenaline and I pump my legs against the wall gaining as much speed as I can. Soon, I float across the depths of the lunar landscape. As I make it to the other side the waves begin to roll and I soon indulge in a meditative session made up of kick turns, slides and a feeling that is unforgettable, none the less blood pumping. I take many runs through various parts of the park, something new and fun within the track of every line. Using the force of my legs to pump and flow through the various, creative landscapes. I lose track of the worries presented by the modern world, while gaining memories, meditation, and an interest in my present environment.
With so much interest and adrenaline pumping in front of my eyes, I forget what worried me before I dropped in. All that matters now is my next turn, my transition down the wall, and my rhythm through the bowl.
I pull my dusty, mud-covered, dark green 2001 Subaru Forester into neutral. Jamming the emergency brake as high as it will go, hoping it does not roll, I slide the stick into gear for extra protection. This time snow banks tower above the windows, and skis fill the roof rack. Same as always I the tax driver, open the door for the prince who patiently sits in the back seat. Swinging the door open Rossi bullets out like a raging bull, running to the snow like he is glued to it. He then sits, waiting for the rest of the pack to prepare for the long uphill battle ahead. Soon we are off slowly gaining elevation, I can feel my lungs heavy with each breathe. The constant, burning pain, strains the whole length of both of my thighs. As I slowly push myself closer and closer to the top with every step. Maintaining a rhythm my body soon adapts to the constant struggle. Slightly blurred I focus my mind on something other then the pain, two boards full of walrus swim in sync with my feet. With this the last hope I focus on my skis, the only thing carrying me to the top. The feeling of adrenaline leaving me exhausted at the top. Soaking in the view like it’s that hot Hawaiian sun. The same sun that just burst from the clouds above, now radiating my face Soon I am ready for the descent down the ocean of white, jitters of excitement fill my body ready to glide down the face. As I drop the first turn my excitement is fulfilled with a feeling only my mind can comprehend. I lose track of the worries presented by the modern world, while gaining memories, meditation, and an interest in my present environment.
The feeling of excitement and adrenaline
Created off energy with no emission,
Besides the pure movements of your own muscles
Spiking your heartbeat with sudden events,
Havoc and harmony become one, leaving you exhausted with a racing heart.

As we sit, stare, and move with little effort and creativity. I find the use of my own energy more appealing then any that comes from a screen. In the recent years it has become apparent to me that consuming my time using up my own energy is more refreshing and lively then that felt from a screen. I support consuming products that require your own skill for entertainment. These are products that have a purpose in which you fulfill, the paint may fade but the purpose is still bold and everlasting. These are the types of items I hold close to my heart, maintained off the love and joy they bring to me. These are the tools I use to interest myself. From the concrete waves of a skate park to the heartbeat of a fish, this feels like my place. A place overloading my self with interest, with what is happening right before my eyes. I lose track of the worries presented by the modern world, while gaining memories, meditation, and an interest in my present environment.
As I sit in my room now with one CFL light glowing against the golden round log behind it, I think what are the origins of this energy? Well straight from Tri-State a majority it is produced from fossil fuel burning plants. This strikes me with a lack of creativity, heating to boil to energy. Before all that it was dug out of the ground only to be stripped and forgotten about, but the scares still last. In recent years, development in the use of Photo Voltaic have sky rocketed. Technology is advancing fast and soon the large black solar panels we see now will be the large satellite dishes of their time. Advancements in the use of wastewater for energy as well as harvesting energy from plants are the types of production we need to support. A local, close to home production method will also create jobs as well as cut the transportation emissions. Innovative products such as camp stoves and teapots that can charge USB powered devices off the use of a T.E.G. (Thermoelectric Generator). Small steps like these should be supported due to the use of creativity to make an innovative difference. Depending on the field I believe that striving for creativity could totally revolutionize the way the world produces energy, this new transition is slowly being made with the increasingly more accessible renewable options.
But there are some sources of energy consumption, which are very hard to live without in the modern world. My Subaru takes me the places I need to go driving 30 miles to school, an everyday task that makes me conscious of my emission habits. I also drive my car to go fish, bike, ski, skate, etc. and the places where I feel at home; the places that bring me back to myself. Without the use of these fossil fuels I would have not gotten to see many of the places I have gone in my life. Human life and our production of energy may cause some problem; but yet it is still a beautiful feat. Now, with conscious and creative steps in the right direction we put our selves on a track to fixing a problem we all have a part in.

Visual Piece and Artist Statement
The ski pole is one I used as a small child, wrapped are the pages of a book by one of my favorite childhood authors, Gary Paulson. These are items showing my childhood and the first steps I took down the slopes and as a child with a love for imagination and the wilderness. As I made forts in the Aspen grove that consumes my house, pretending to be a boy of the wilderness.
Down from the ski pole dangles a pair of chainrings, these add a dreamcatcher element to this native inspired piece. Litter with skateboard bearing these are the mechanisms that set my energy into motion, throughout the modern environments. Beside the metal dangles rocks and shells, these are from various places of the U.S. which contain sentimental love in my heart. The large rock was once placed at the base of the Bear Mountain slide path, the turquoise color caught my eye as I was harassing small brooke trout with my fly rod in early August of last summer. Hanging at the same level is a Petoskey Stone I found on Burt Lake in northern Michigan, an ancient fossil of corral with thrived on the depths of the Great Lakes.
On the opposite side a shell from White Sands Beach in Kona, Hawaii. As well as a feather most likely from a Red Tailed Hank. These two items show the natural and artificial methods of transportation in the world. Many of the places I have gotten to see rely on gallons upon gallons of fossil fuels to experience. This idea makes me think about the large role these type of fuel play in my life.
Strapped to the center of the ski pole, holds a my first fly reel which broke on the way to Michigan. Never getting much use I figured this reel was perfect for my sculpture. Lower hanging are a collection of rocks the flattest is from South Mineral Creek. On top are rocks I found on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, the smallest a piece of sea glass. Yes, that is a coyote fur from South Dakota, picked up by my father on a trip back. Purchased as it resembled my parent's dog, a Coyote hybrid who they called Kiva. Reminding my of my dog Rossi who accompanies me on many of my adventures, big or small. He is a little brother to me and is quite a character.
Acting as a spine dangling from the bottom is a bike chain, spaced apart along the way are some ski baskets. These are to add an artistic element of a spine to the Coyote. The ski poles reming be to falling snow and my love for the mountains.

Energy and Place Reflection
This project of energy and place has been by far my favorite project at Animas High School, feeling more like a deep self reflection then a school project. In the past couple of weeks, my peers and I have listened to many speakers who have devoted their lives to protecting and ensuring a sustainable future for the up coming generations. These were to help us understand the impact of energy on the environment around us, as well as understanding the impact on place of these energy producers. We also looked at the work of some photographers and cinematographers to get the gears turning in your heads about our sense of place writing and visual piece.
The sense of place essay was hard for me to write, with so many ideas it was hard to go along with one. But, the one I did chose to run with offered a large amount of personal growth and valuable insight for the future.
One idea that really inspires me is the use of your own energy through products, who need human energy to fulfill them, objects such as a bike, skateboard, surf board, skis, fly rod, etc. Consuming the renewable energy of your own body, for your use and entertainment. These types of products also ease the mind from the worries to the modern world, releasing dopamine a great emission from the brain. With a similar interest in my present and no other environment, these types of tools bring be back to myself. My mind producing thoughts about what is in front of me and no other environment.
As I wrote about my sense of place portraying a state of mind that I deeply crave, I gathered items that I wanted to use for the visual piece of this project. Deciding I wanted to make a sculpture I found many useless or forgotten about items of interest. With a bucket full of collected ski, bike, skate, fishing, and a coyote skin, as well as shells and rocks from around the world I was ready to get to work. As I collected items I found that it is these products we should consume over anything. The use of a bike lasts way longer then any screen, the use of your own energy lasts longer then any gallon of gas.
My visual piece as well as my writing are both products that I am very happy with, although the part I am most proud of is neither. I feel proud of the process and the time I had to think about this project. Throughout this project I gained a deeper understanding about what I want my future to consist of as well as how it is going to get there. Realizing how much I love the things I do as well as the place that lets me do them had a large impact in myself.
Chemistry and Humanities have been by far my favorite classes of my Junior year, this project was joint between these two classes making it very insightful for myself. Learning about the main energy producers of our country, then learning about the effects and impact these have on our place was of much interest to myself. I gained a lot of knowledge from these two classes that I cherish now, and in the future to come. The opinions I have based on these new ideas are uniquely my own, and I am excited to share them with others. Overall this was the project that motivated me through the final struggles of Junior year.

Happiness and meaning reflection
The purpose of my existence is to take advantage of the emotions that I am granted with as a human, as well as using these emotions to my fullest advantage to create a beautiful, well lived life. I practice these emotions in activities that I lose myself in, this is what shapes my life. Watching the tide pull the sand as you skip rock into the water under the sunshine, for countless hours feeling a state of flow. This is what I live for, life without a sense of time. Living in the moment, each that one that changed it. I feel happiness when I am not caught up with the time of a clock but caught up in the time of my life. In this world of time I feel the most achieved when I lose track of it. After all time is a constant number, never changing but ever changing and how you use it is up to you. Once you loose track of it you might be surprised what it will bring you.
"As you are now, each thought you choose to have is based on your surroundings they then turn into your decisions, these thoughts propel you down the ever changing road of life."
Questions:
1. What happens after you have found happiness?
2. How much do your failures contribute to your happiness?
3. Do animals find happiness or depression?
4. Do you need other people in your life to find happiness?
5. Do you need to find happiness?

Too Civilized to Enjoy Themselves
Riley Wanzek
The human race is full of passion, full of many different emotions that many other being cannot achieve. As a result, we are the only being capable of questioning our own existence. I believe a marker of a well lived life is the use of these emotions. Living a meaningful life means taking advantage of the emotions that you were granted, because nothing else is capable of being I, being you, being the human. “the lesson of the moth” is a short poem pursuing the idea that there are two ways to go about life, one is bringing a burning passion with every instance of life, this way of life was represented by the moths ambition for burning passion. The second, represented by the cockroach states the idea that you can live full of longevity and feel half the passion but still live with meaning.
Although living a life with unpredictable emotions may feel overwhelming at times, in the long run it will be those emotions you remember most. Marquis makes the statement that the cockroach then became jealous over the moth’s emotional feelings toward passion, wishing he was willing to die over some feeling of passion.Ultimately hinting that the life of an expressive, fully lived being is more complete and self fulfilling in the long run.
In “the lesson of the moth”, archy realizes that he is not living his life to the fullest, he is just along for the ride. Wishing he resembled a figure more like the moth who is more concerned about the passion and fire throughout the journey rather than the length, leaving us with his regret of not living a life full of the most passion he can bring to each second, choice, and trail in life.
In “the lesson of the moth” the moth explains to archy;
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist that to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty
our attitude toward life
is come easy go easy
we are like the human beings
used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves
As the moth tells us living a life of full passion and achieving happy even for just an instant is more rewarding and meaningful, then the pursuit to life that is lived with little passion which is spread over a variety of interests and options but none achieving a special bond. Untimately, I believe that this poem is showing that there are two ways to go about the tasks and interests you purse in an everyday life. Constantly going out of your comfort zone, and living life with as much passion you can bring to each minute will, in return grant you with a full and meaningful life. Where as living with little passion may still result in a meaningful life, but with the lack of exercise in emotions one may feel under achieved.
The decisions we make in life show us an array of different interests we can invest in, passions are found while experimenting with the emotions that these interests give us . After finding the perfect match, the connection can be inseparable. As the waves crash in a harmonious tune, the soul of a surfer is set ablaze as he is lit with the passion of feeling free and rhythmic. The movie Happy used emotion and well being of many different groups of individuals to measure happiness, one of which was a surfer from Brazil. This man showed a life of little consumeristic luxuries while exhibiting a great deal of love for the passion he gets from riding the rhythmic waves of the ocean. I believe this shows a truly fulfilling passion because not much more is needed other then the fire and beauty.
“Divorce your story and marry the truth, when you find that story it will move you forward.” This was a quote expressed by Tony Robbins in his “How Can Drive You A Success?” podcast on NPR. I believe it encourages each and every individual to take control of their decisions, while using their human emotions to find what they want meaning to resemble in their lives. If you currently aren't living what you what to resemble change it, life is too short to live in regret . While living through the ups and downs, along with the twists and turns of the roller coaster, life may seem hectic but you are human for a reason. Taking advantage of the emotions that have brought us so far will serve you well, even when found in the simplest places.

In “the lesson of the moth” the moth explains to archy;
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist that to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty
our attitude toward life
is come easy go easy
we are like the human beings
used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves

Happiness and meaning
Riley Wanzek
Throughout all of the different readings and media sources that we have looked at regarding life and happiness I really liked the novel, The Stranger along with the movie Happy which we watched during class and the poem, “the lesson of the moth”.
In “the lesson of the moth” the moral of the poem is that within this life that each of us leads there are really two different styles to do activities in our lives. One is a life full of over achieving some strong passion that you have in your life, living it to the fullest and loving every minute of it. This life might not be as long as one lived in more of a mellow state but more satisfying. The other way to lead your life is to not find as strong as a passion for something and find a variety of different activities and that you enjoy but do not have one that you are completely glued too. I believe that this shows that our each individual purpose on this Earth can be very different from each other but rely on the other to make it happen. It also makes me think about what the purpose of my existence is and which of these two styles of life and how I choose to use my freedom.
Next, by far my favorite sources about our happiness was the movie that we watched during class, this was the movie Happy. This movie showed how many different cultures around the world measure and find happiness and if these different groups of people have been successful in finding happiness or not. This movie really made me think about my happiness and what I can do to improve it and what I am doing well as far as my well being goes. A point at the beginning of the film that I thought was really interesting was that in order to be happy we need to have freedoms and that we can only have more freedom if we have more variety in our lives. So this made me think that I cannot get comfortable with my self and that I need to always have a variety of things to do that make me feel free and I will find happiness. Overall this film have me the message that in order to find happiness we need to explore the ins ad outs of the free feelings in life, these are the types of feelings we get when we create new experiences, love, and the feeling of flow in the daily routes of our lives.
The final essential question, what does it mean to live a meaningful life? Is a question I think everyone has to answer for him or herself. I think a meaningful life is defined differently for each of our own different sets of rules in which we live our lives by. Through out all of these different readings and media clips I have decided that a meaningful life for everyone means something different and as long as you make an effort to make the things you do meaningful to yourself you will find happiness and meaning. Much like the real life superhero’s in, The Amazing Adventures of Phoenix Jones these brave young men find meaning in their lives by pretending to be superhero’s, as long as they believe that their lives have meaning and they have a place in the world they live meaningful life.
Part 2: Ted Talk Response
· We want more and more happiness
· Negativity is much more sensitive then happiness
· Emotions change much more then just our feelings
· Nature heals more then walls
Throughout this list of Ted Talks that I could watch, I did not find one that I really got inspired by. I chose to pick, “The new era of positive Psychology” and this talk was mainly about happiness and how we gain and lose it. One topic that I found really interesting is how much more emotional we are about the negative aspects compared to the positive aspects of each of our lives. As I think a can really feel how the negatives are much more boldly remembered then most of the good. Another point that took my interest is the facts about how much better people heal when exposed to nature, this was a reoccurring fact in many of the media clips we watched. I will keep a strong balance of this in my life because I think it is very important to have that natural release. I agree with most of the ideas that Martin made in this talk mainly about achieving happiness. One question I have is, is there anyone out there who is happy with out nature or any of these other releases such as flow and all of the other freedoms we chose to make us happy?
Korematsu v. u.s. (1944)
As a result of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, many drastic measures were taken to ensure the security of our country. These drastic measures include things such as war relocation camps. A place where thousands of people of Japanese ancestry were held in confined areas, to protect themselves and our country. But, these measures were seen a un constitutional. A trial arose to these measures, Korematsu vs. the U.S. this is the case that we would mock. For the trial, there were any different positions such as prosecution and defense witness, as well as lawyers for each side and a panel of judges. Throughout this project I learned so much about the positions people take in the court room, as well as the order in which each different person speaks, and all of the different arguments each side can make to the other.
In this trial I played the role of two prosecution witnesses. My witnesses were both John Franklin Carter, an experienced journalist and Karl Bendetson, a man who had much power in the removal and incarceration of people of Japanese ancestry. Vital role play and background knowledge were needed to be successful in the trial as for you had cross and direct examination. During the cross examination un rehearsed questions where asked. As for in the direct examination part of the trial you were asked questions that you rehearsed with your lawyer. Teamwork was a big part in this section as using the right evidence in the right way could help you and by making valid point could side track the defense side. While work ing with my lawyer we would come up with points that made yourselves sound superior. My lawyer and I worked through these questions with lots of collaboration.
During this project I read many historical government and military documents. Many of which were on the U.S. side of things so you didn't get to see different perspectives on this whole situation. Next year, I would hope that the diversity of text will let the students decide more for themselves what perspective they what to take on the events that happened. One of my downfalls in this project were not knowing the ins and outs of both of my witnesses, making it hard to answer questions in the trial with a complete understands of each important actions and choice they made and how that affected the trial. Giving the rle of only one witness to each student in the class I think will help the students find a deeper sense of character within the trial.

Hello everyone my name is John Franklin Carter I am 47 years old. I was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. Many people know me as the author of the newspaper column, “We the People”. Through out my life I have become a successful journalist, columnist, biographer, and novelist. I have written over 30 books, many of which are detective novels including a character Dennis Tyler whom I made up myself.
Before the attacks on Pearl Harbor I was sent by a loyal friend of mine the president, Franklin D. Roosevelt to investigate that status and security that can be trusted with the Japanese Americans in our country. This intelligence report was conducted by Curtis B. Munson. based on the research of this report we concluded that Japanese Americans present no security risk to our country. Although our evidence supports no risk, I sent a misleading summary of this report to the president.
The report I received from Munson highlighted the key points showing that there is a low risk that any of these Japanese Americans will cause any type of sabotage to our country as they have shown that they are loyal to our country as for they have left their home country and heritage to join ours. As I wrote the report which would be sent to the president I illustrated a point that some of these people would be the type to strap a bomb to their chest causing harm to our nation.
My report was filed weeks before the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Although I may of altered the initial conclusions my report it may of been found more believable after the event of these attacks. As my report and these attacks show that there is room for question about this race of people in our country. The meaning of my altered report has more meaning now that these attacks happened

My name is Karl Bendetson I am 40 years old, born on October 11, 1907. I grew up in Aberdeen, Washington with my parents who were first generation American citizens. Our earlier ancestors were Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Many people know me for the role that I played with the internment of Japanese Americans during the second World War. Later, I realized I did not like what I had done and tired to downplay the involvement that I had with this.
I had a large part in the exclusion camps that many Japanese Americans were put into. Within sixty days following the events at Pearl Harbor I wrote three position papers, on of which be the Excutive Order 9066. I had a harsh view on the “Japanese question” along with the Alien Enemy Control Unit, an organization defending the liberties of people of Japanese descent but who are citizens, Nisei. DeWitt and I wrote a report to the Secretary of War Henry Stimson, recommending an evacuation of the Japanese race as an enemy race. As for a threat that these people engage in attacks and sabotage.
“It, therefore, follows that along the vital Pacific Coastal Frontier over 112,00 potential enemies of Japanese extraction are at large today.” The very fact that no sabotage has been taken scares me, I believe that such action will be taken in the near future. Soon Executive Order 9066 was set into place and the evacuation of 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry to military areas on the West Coast.
This order that I wrote includes all people of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien. Will be sent to exclusion camps, even the Nisei. Although these people may have become Americanized in the past couple generations the racial strains are undiluted. Meaning Japanese immigrants were forced to leave the West Coast and were imprisoned without any authority to defend themselves in court. I truly believe these people are a problem and believe it is for our benefit to exclude them from our country.

-As my report was going the president I wanted it to be something he would trust and the security of our country to remain safe.
Why did you intend to make these people seem more dangerous then what Munson reported?
-Days after my report was published the attacks on Pearl Harbor took place. This is why the report needed to include a stronger threat of an enemy. This event shows that there is a threat that may be present. It is human nature to feel unsafe around people who are of the same race as the ones who intend to harm you. We had no choice but to be scared, this is why the security needed to intensify.
Part 2: Evidence
-The Munson Report

Due to the twisted conspiracy theories based off of the lack of research shown by the HAARP research facility, and the weak claims from the government and military support the idea that the HAARP is being used for communication with submarines while conducting research about the Ionosphere. These claims are weak in my perspective I think there are easier and better ways to conduct research on our atmosphere and to communicate with subs around the world.
Since I could not take a side on this technology that I really was happy with, also since I'm not an expert on either the radio waves this apparatus produces or the atmosphere I was hard to know if what I'm being told is true. Although I do know one thing and that is the fact that the HAARP is harming our environment, by using the concentrated beams they have the ability to burn through the Ionosphere. An oblivious down fall of this mystery machine. This is only one downfall as for I believe that we do not know the full potential of what this system can produce. In the future, I believe we should closely monitor the effects that this apparatus unleashes on the environment. Also the benefits need to be clear and supported by a cause that is significant. If not I do not think we should be wasting our resources on this facility.
As seen in my visual piece you can see the title says, H.A.A.R.P. The Next Atomic Bomb? I chose to make this my title due to the fact that we do not yet know the full potential of these antennas. Much like the use of the atomic bomb, using a technology that creates much more devastation then intended. Although the conspiracies behind this technology are all a bit twisted, so is our government. Therefore I believe that there is plausibility to some extent within each of then. I would like to see what happens to this technology in the future.
The rhetoric of my piece includes a catchy title that makes people want to learn more, this was very successful at exhibition. As for the quotes I used both represented my perspective on this issue. By the idea that this facility is both wrong, secretive, and greedy. I think many people bought into my rhetoric as for many people agreed with me on my perspective. The tone of my poster is that this technology is wrong. My poster also very eye catching and your eyes flow throughout the paper just how I wanted it to work.

OP-ED: Angels Don't Play this h.a.a.r.p.
In the barren wilderness of America's last frontier, a mysterious research program is underway. Stationed just outside of Gakona, Alaska one will find the Highly Active Aurora Research Program, also known as H.A.A.R.P.. The H.A.A.R.P. apparatus is a electromagnetic wave generator consisting of 40 acres of IRI antennas. Also known as an Ionospheric Research Instrument, these antennas are each 72 feet tall and the most common research instrument at the H.A.A.R.P. station. These antennas are precisely positioned to shoot radio waves in a concentrated beam up at the Ionosphere, waves are generally shot at 3,600,000 Watts. Where they excite the particles and can preform a range of different uses, claims from the military support the use of communication. While many theories suggest the use of these high frequency waves is to alter the jet stream, therefore giving the H.A.A.R.P. the ability to alter weather, and potentially gaining the ability to engineer natural disasters using the in-sync capabilities of other H.A.A.R.P. stations across the globe.
Funded by the U.S. Air force, U.S. Military, and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The purpose of this program is to analyze the different characteristics of the Ionosphere, along with enhancing further knowledge for radio communications and global surveillance. As for short term advances this technology allows the U.S. military to communicate with different fleets of submarines by using radio signals sent from the H.A.A.R.P. station. As the signals reach the ocean, the submarines can then pick them up using the ocean as their antenna.(Popular Mechanics)
Due to a lack to public records supporting the research conducted at the H.A.A.R.P. facility many conspiracies have aroused as to what is really happening in the upper reaches of our atmosphere. Whether it is to create missile protection shields, eviscerate enemy satellites, set off the occasional earth quake, or control the minds of millions of people the operations at the Highly Active Aurora Research Program needs to up front tell the public the pros and cons to such activity.(Military Mystery Machine)
Although the H.A.A.R.P. technology may not have the ability to alter the weather or control the minds of millions of people, the government has not been up front with the uses and benefits of this program as they utilize it to manipulate portions of the environment without full disclosure from the public, therefore causing damage to the environment.(Military Mystery Machine)
The preamble of the U.S. Constitution states that the government will ensure security and peace for the people of our country: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” The biggest problem with HAARP is that the government and U.S. military are claiming that this program is to ensure the security of our country. However, most of the people do not even know about the HAARP, so how can we attempt to gain steps toward security when the people who should be making us feel more secure hiding and lying what they are really doing? As the preamble say we will also ensure the peace and security for future generations. By the use of the H.A.A.R.P. we are not ensuring this measure for our future generations.(Legal Information Institute)
Reasoning based on the outcome of happiness and the greater good or the majority, this is a main principle for the moral philosophy of Utilitarianism. In order for this philosophy to become successful the greater good needs to be happy and secure. As the overall goal of this research is take a step closer to security the greater good needs to be on track with the work in which it will take to get there. One of the main ideas used to make the greater good happy is using cost benefit analysis, simply weighing the costs of a situation with the benefits. As I measure the costs of the H.A.A.R.P.'s production with the benefits I quickly come to the conclusion that the costs drastically out weigh the benefits of communicating with submarine fleets. As it is using up 23 trillion cubic feet of natural gas found in the Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope of Alaska. It is also destroying parts of the Ionosphere with the high frequency concentrated beams.
So I can only base my opinion of the facts that I do know, which suggests that this technology is causing harm to the environment, as well as wasting natural resources by using this expensive apparatus. I do not believe that the actually known damage has even yet reached its potential of what the H.A.A.R.P. is capable of producing. More research about the effects of this technology need to be presented along with a clear reason for the continuation of its use. Although many of these conspires are twisted I believe that there is room for plausibility in their context. As far fetched as some of these theories may seem I will keep my eye on the H.A.A.R.P. In the next couple of years to see which road this research takes. Hopefully it produces relative data that benefits the Earth instead of some of the other plausible sinister uses.

project refelction
For this project we had to find a political issue of interest. Then we had to research this project and develop a perspective we believed in about this topic. Once we had our perspective developed we needed to make a political campaign poster to make more people gain the perspective that we had. This was done using all different types of rhetoric (ethos, pathos, and logos.) We had to tie these issue into the Moral Philosophy content that we learned, my issue mostly related to Utilitarianism due to the fact of increased security.
Based on a political issue that is not very well known, I picked an issue that has many conspiracies based around it. I found that it is very hard to base an opinion of something you don't know much about because when you don't know much about a subject the rhetoric is very easy to believe when you do not known fact from fiction. This was the hardest part for me as I read many different sources I found it a challenging task to come up with a perspective that I truly believe in as each source would contradict the last. Making a perspective on this issue was very hard for me. Although, I was able to base my opinion off the effects this facility causes on the environment. The Habit of Heart and Mind that proved to be the most successful for me as I tried to come up with a perspective was perseverance. I had to persevere past all of the twisted theories and figure out a perspective that I knew I could believe in.
As I look at the rubric for the visual piece, I think that the category that I will score highest in is either the Integration or the perspective category. I believe I will do well in both of these categories because I integrated quotes in my visual piece that really shows my perspective on this type of research. I was very happy with my quote choice as for I think is clearly illustrated my perspective. Next, on the Op-ed side of things I believe that the overall organization of the flow of how my Op-ed read is what the most powerful part of my Op-ed. I was very satisfy with the way that I placed my different quotes and pieces of evidence. Because of all of the different parts of this issue I was able to come up with many different stand points about this issue. As for the weakest part of my visual was probably my refinement as it was a glued to a piece of paper glued to a piece of cardboard. I wish I would of used my time more wisely and I could of used this time to make a more refined piece. As for my Op-ed I believe that my proofreading probably had some flaws due to the fact that I always have problems with this.
If I had a little longer on this project I would of liked to of made sure I had all of the requirements for my visual. As it was simply just a Photoshop poster and was not very integrated with different types of art. I think this would of made it more fun to look at. I also think that this would of added to the pathos of my visual piece. As for my Op-ed I would of made sure that I had all of the Moral Philosophy requirements because I know I did not have a quote from a moral philosopher which I needed. Although I did include one on my poster that I was very proud of.

This I Believe
Essential Question: What do I believe and why?
Throughout my life the mountains have always been a popular destination with family and friends. I always loved spending time and enjoy the mountains. From camping in the summertime to motorcycle rides in the fall. These are some of the ways to enjoy the mountains at their finest. Though the real danger does not start until the aspen leaves have dropped and the flakes start to fall. A time in which is my favorite season to experience the mountains. A time when the mountains deserve the most respect. Also the most dangerous,Winter.
I learned to ski and backcountry ski at a young age, I started going backcountry skiing with my father in about 6th grade. As I learned the rope from my father and other mentors. Most of the time we could go to, The Backyard, a mellow grade backcountry playground. Perfect for easy backcountry skiing, It is located on the top of Red Mountain Pass. As the years went one I found myself one more and more difficult and dangerous backcountry terrain. The peak of it being one sunny day in the winter of 7th grade as I went backcountry skiing with two of my good friends and four adults.
This was going to be the biggest backcountry trip that I had ever done. As we left one car on the east side of Anvil Mountain near the base of Silverton Mountain Ski Area. A quick shuttle ride over to the west side was needed, where at the Ophir Pass parking lot we got geared up. As I looked up at the mountain I was very excited. I thought of the view and the powder turns that I knew where waiting for me on the other side.
But before the reward there was much work that needed to be done. I put my pack over my shoulders, filled with backcountry essentials and not much more but candy and water. I fastened my telemark skis and waited for the group to make the final beacon check and other last minute preparations before the hike. A steep hike it was, as we zig zagged slowly up the massive face my body soon became tired. With the frequent peek through the trees at the mountain across the valley to see how close we were to treeline. Where I knew I had a lunch break and a better view. The very much needed lunch finally got devoured. Now all that stood between me and some of the best skiing was the final push. And it was done with my skis strapped to my backpack. The final grade was to steep and too rocky to skin. Trudging forward I made the frequent stop to look at the view. The view that now put butterflies in my stomach.
The view from what I saw out the window of the car. I was now standing on top of. The mountains that I had looked up at all my life I was now standing on top of them. The adrenaline was pumping. A feeling that each step was just another to make me more terrified. Although it was a calming terrified. One I had to make in through by myself, in the silence. I was on top of the world and I had no choice but to like it. I did exactly that as I go my skis ready to go as I was on my way to the bottom.
Through all of this I gained respect for the mountain. The mountain gave respect back. These powerful silent monsters have gained a different respect from me. A respect of humility, that makes me respect everyone who I find on my path of life.
This I Believe Reflection
All of us are unique, all of us have different beliefs. During the “This I Believe” essay I really got to express one of my core beliefs of life. Much like other “This I Believe” essays it was a brief story that connected a larger truth that I believe in. Most “This I Believe” essays are between 500-700 words, mine was about 600. In class we listened to many different examples to get the wheels turning in our head about this project. Some of the skills we learned to make our essays the best were communal relevance, narrative coherence, and authentic voice. These skills are all ones that are very important for a “This I Believe”. Each skill makes the story better and connected to a larger truth. This belief was to be personal to each individual truth.
As I thought about my belief I found that I really have a passionate love for the mountains and their power. I got to put one of the greatest experiences of my life into words, which was hard because it was such a powerful experience. An experience full of perseverance. Perseverance was one of the main factors of why it even happened. Through out this past year of my life I have really looked into depth of what kinds of things do I want to believe in, and this essay really helped my illustrate one of my own beliefs that may not be as concrete to others. Also before this project I didn’t know I believed in the mountains, but now I do and it has moved my thoughts of what I believe in forward.
I believe during my essay I did a good job of telling a brief story with a very vivid picture. “I fastened my telemark skis and waited for the group to make the final beacon check and other last minute preparations before the hike. A steep hike it was, as we zig zagged slowly up the massive face my body soon became tired. With the frequent peek through the trees at the mountain across the valley to see how close we were to treeline. Where I knew I had a lunch break and a better view. The final grade was to steep and too rocky to skin. Trudging forward I made the frequent stop to look at the view. The view that now put butterflies in my stomach.” This is an excerpt from the story that I told, I believe a clear picture is portrayed with this personal narrative.
Since the larger truth of my essay was making the statement, that after you can respect the mountains you have a different level of respect for everyone. I think I could of made this point more clear. I needed a more or a concrete example of how this experience made me gain a different level of respect and how that carried over to my everyday life. I think that this part made the larger truth of my essay a little weak and if I were going to send it into NPR this is the one major change that I would work on refining to make my This I believe more refined truthful and beautiful.
This whole idea of this I believe and getting to write my own let me explore the things that I am passionate about and love and how I can believe in those things. It also gave me confidence in the things I love and how I should believe in them. You don’t just have to believe in religion. I also loved reading others' this I believe because no matter what they where about I could always find some larger truth that was relevant and truthful.
